A tenant recently asked the Student Union for advice on what efforts are being made by them for students in non-Queens Accomodation and was told the following:-
“……Queen’s Accommodation gave students the option to end their tenancies without financial penalty as of Friday 27th March. Unfortunately the University has no control over how flexible individual landlords and letting agents are prepared to be, and at present, the best advice we can give to students is to try to negotiate with landlords for early release or reduced rental payments – without which, their tenancy agreements, including guarantor liability, still stand.
As the Students’ Union, we have been working alongside NUS-USI to highlight the issues faced by student renters to government. This work is ongoing, including contact being made with the relevant politicians – including the First and Deputy First Ministers. We are hopeful that something may be put in place to allow students to either receive a rent break or to leave their tenancies early. I would encourage you to keep an eye on the news and the Advice SU Twitter page (@Qubsu_Advice) as we will be providing updates as soon as we are made aware of them…….”
